                           Sunday April 24t
h, 2004

The April Speakeasy is teeming with talent, from the always- satisfying Steve Almond (My Life in Heavy Metal, Candyfreak) to the sounds of the Santiago Steps. The bookmark is done by L.A. photographer, Deniz Uzunoglu, whose line of cards, currently carried by our city's finer independent bookstores, will also be on view and available for purchase. We will be celebrating the release of Steve Almond's The Evil B.B. Chow, speaking easily, sipping secretly (Gilded Gimlets!). Our parlor game will involve pencil and paper. So wrap up your Passover celebrations and come on down!

Password is "skull."

Steve Almond is the author of the national bestseller Candyfreak : A Journey Through the Chocolate Underbelly of America and the critically acclaimed short story collection My Life in Heavy Metal. His stories have appeared in publications ranging from Playboy to Tin House to Zoetrope. He is a regular commentator on the NPR affiliate WBUR in Boston and teaches creative writing at Boston College.

Key facts about the Santiago Steps:
1. There are five people in the band, including a trumpet player/organist/mathematician. Another is all woman.
2. They are from the newly notorious OC.
3. Three of the five members work in education, but there will be no formal instruction.
4. Their first CD, 2002's "A-flutter," was, according to the All Music Guide, a "tiny delight of an album."
5. Their new CD, "Points & Corners," will be released in May 2005 and features contributions from Aimee Bender, John Hoskinson, and others.
6. Their songs go from the raucous to the sweet, but they will be playing a more stripped-down set for the speakeasy. Still worth a bookmark.
7. The Steps are trying to do their part for their fellow citizens; from the OC Weekly: "What better band than the Santiago Steps to make us hopeful about humanity?"
8. Believe it or not, they have a website: www.thesantiagosteps.com
